On the other side of the Mediterranean Sea: the lexicon of migration in the North African Press between news and stereotypes
Abstract
In 2012, at ESSCH in Glasgow, I presented a paper about the perception of migrant people in the pages of some national Italian newspapers. Here I’ll examine the percep‐tion on migration matters in the newspapers on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. As in the previous research, I’ve been conducting a linguistic research on frequencies and cotexts in a portion of articles extracted from Northern‐African newspapers, weekly magazines and political and cultural reviews published in the second semester 2009. The arising questions are: how are linguistically contextualized migration matters within the African press? What is the lexicon describing the phenomenon, and what is the image of Europe delivered?
