Private vices and public virtues of the Jerosolimitan of Corleone
Abstract
Abstract
This work examines the role of the Hospitallers in Corleone, a great rural town of Sicily, between the papale inquiry that showed the poverty of the Order (1373) and the death of the preceptor Antonio Taberna (1419). In the decade 1378-1388 members of rich families were buried at St John, gave money, commissioned sacred objects, paintings, and Biancofiore de Brancaccio built a new hospital. The preceptor Ruggero Vaccarella improved finances, but in 1399 he was replaced by Antonio Taverna, belonging to a famous family of Messina. The new preceptor took care of the Order’s goods and remained in charge until his death, notwithstanding the rape of a young girl.
