Abstract

This paper tries to trace the studies and the perspectives that, over time, have analyzed and "narrated" the Mediterranean. This geographical area has often been viewed as a homogeneous entity, both geographically and historically. It has also been symbolically compared to a bridge that connects various shores. However, it has also been represented as a heterogeneous area characterized by fatal fractures. Thus it has been metaphorically associated with a separating boundary. The interpretation proposed in the final part of this paper tries to overcome this dichotomous logic by advocating a process to establish a “plural and shared” Mediterranean identity.
