The foundation and endowment of the Bosove leper hospital in Sardinia (12th century)
Abstract
St. Leonard of Bosove Hospital is the oldest charitable institution attested in Sardinia during the late Middle Ages, founded under the authority of Judge Barisone II of Torres (1153-1191). Its wealth of documentation, including unpublished ones, positions it among the most extensively documented and studied cases. This essay aims to elucidate the timeline and methods of its establishment and endowment in the 12th century. It also delves into the institutional and organizational transformations experienced by the hospital and the management of its substantial land holdings in the subsequent centuries.
