The artistic production in the kingdom of Arborea between the “Giudicati” power and the Mendicant Orders (13th - 15th Centuries)
Abstract
The kingdom of Arborea, the last bastion of ancient autonomies and only survivor of the four Sardinian giudicati, continued to import Gothic sculpture from central Italy during the entire course of the 14th century. The kingdom retained the legacy of the program started in the previous century with the church of San Francesco di Stampace in Cagliari, attesting to a particular sensitivity to Franciscan cultural irradiation manifested both in architecture and in plastic arts, as well as in painting. It is moreover worth noting - especially in urban areas and centres of power of the giudicato of Arborea - a choice of “artistic” programme that went hand in hand with the development of the mendicant Orders in the territory that showed an implication, first, of ideology, then of identity.
