The maritime shipowners of the Finale at the time of the Spanish domination, between trade and privateering (1640-1713)
Abstract
The essay explain the history of privateering in the Marquisate of Finale (Liguria, Italy) during the Habsburg’s Age, with a particular reference to the 17th and 18th centuries: its origins, its expansion and all the problems on legal and diplomatic levels. The essay also show the unavoidable connection between privateering and commerce pointing out how every privateer was at the same time predator and merchant.
Il saggio illustra la storia della guerra di corsa del Marchesato del Finale (Liguria, Italia) durante la dominazione spagnola, con particolare riferimento al XVII e XVIII secolo: le sue origini, il suo sviluppo e i vari problemi insorti sul piano giuridico e diplomatico. Inoltre, il saggio evidenzia la stretta connessione tra guerra di corsa e commercio dimostrando come ogni patrone marittimo alternava l’attività mercantile a quella corsara.
