The French consular network in the Adriatic from the eighteenth century to the Napoleonic wars (1754-1814)
Abstract
This essay aims to reconstruct the network of the French consuls in the Adriatic Sea in two different periods: the second half of the eighteenth century and the Napoleonic era. Starting from the perspective outlined by recent studies of the subject, which emphasized the role played by personal ties in the activity of the consuls, the analysis attempts to reconstruct the map of the consular network, to investigate its composition and the geographical location of the contacts, both institutional and private. Using as sources both official correspondence and personal letter-books, the essay also analyzes social interactions to understand how the network works.
