Giovanni Battista Ramusio and the first circumnavigation: Geographical news, circulation of information and intertextuality
Abstract
The return to Spain in 1522 of the ship Victoria, gave rise to the production and circulation of numerous reports about the first circumnavigation. Antonio Pigafetta, one of the expedition’s participants, prepared the most substantial description of the journey; but other humanist writers, such as Maximilian Transylvanus or Pietro Martire d’Anghiera, were responsible for many other narratives, which enjoyed important European circulation. The present text revisits some of the first reports of the Magellan – Elcano journey, trying to clarify, along the way, the role played in this informational revolution by the humanist Giovanni Battista Ramusio.
