Abstract

The aim of this paper is to trace the perception of the ethnographic panorama of the world through the description that Francesco Carletti (1594-1606) left in his “Ragionamenti del mio viaggio intorno al mondo” (ca. XVII c.). His account of “things done and seen” was written and supported by the use of sources such as – for example - “Le Devisement du Monde” by Marco Polo (1254-1324), the Atlas Sinicus and the sixteenth century historical-geographical compilation by Giovanni Battista Ramusio (1485-1557). The rich and beautiful overview of the people he met along his journey around the world provides one of the early witnesses of a global map of human geography in-between the Renaissance and the Baroque.
