The image of Ferdinand Magellan through the voices of Antonio Pigafetta and Giovan Battista Ramusio

Abstract

Tendo como nódulo analítico, uma compilação de narrativas de viagens, a Delle Navigationi et Viaggi de Giovan Battista Ramusio, analisa-se como, no século XVI, se construiu uma imagem sobre  Fernão de Magalhães e a sua viagem  de 1519 às “Índias”.  A partir do uso de instrumentos hermenêuticos como os facultados pelos “Encounter studies“ e de conceitos como tradução cultural  desoculta-se, através da descrição da viagem magalhânica  pela voz de Antonio Pigafetta, e da sua incorporação numa colectânea de textos, o perfil de um homem, o comandante de uma expedição. Nesta análise expõe-se como Antonio Pigafetta  transmite o seu olhar sobre as acções que testemunhou e como esse olhar se transfigura  quando as suas palavras são incorporadas numa narrativa que obedece a princípios historiográficos mais amplos como os perseguidos por Giovan Battista Ramusio.

Having as an analytical core, a compilation of travel writings, the Delle Navigationi et Viaggi by Giovan Battista Ramusio, we analyse the ways in which, in the sixteenth century, Ferdinand Magellan and his 1519 voyage to the "Indies"images were created. Using hermeneutic tools such as those provided by "Encounter studies" and concepts such as cultural translation, we uncover, through Antonio Pigafetta's description of the Magellanic voyage and its inclusion in a collection of texts, the profile of a man, the commander of an expedition. This analysis outlines as Antonio Pigafetta conveys his gaze on the actions he witnessed and how that gaze is transformed when his words are embedded in a narrative that follows wider historiographical principles such as those pursued by Giovan Battista Ramusio.
