Wheat, cheese and tuna: Sardinian goods exported during the 17th century
Abstract
In the seventeenth century Sardinia had intense economic relations with the main Iberian and Italian commercial harbours. The inbound and outbound traffic were mainly managed by the Ligurian merchants from the trade diaspora, who introduced agricultural surpluses and other local products into the Mediterranean commercial circuits. In addition to wheat (which remained the main source of state revenue), the most continuously exported goods were cheese, salted tuna, leather, coral and galena.
Nel XVII secolo la Sardegna ha intensi rapporti economici con le principali piazze marittime iberiche e italiane. I traffici in entrata e in uscita sono gestiti soprattutto dai mercanti liguri della diaspora, che immettono le eccedenze agricole e gli altri prodotti locali nei circuiti commerciali mediterranei. Oltre al grano (che rimane la principale fonte delle entrate statali) le merci esportate con maggiore continuità sono il formaggio, il tonno salato, le pelli, il corallo e la galena.
