Panel painting in Sardinia between the fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. Sources, typologies, and case studies in the late medieval Mediterranean
Abstract
The study of panel painting between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries allows us to clearly understand the cultural, historical-artistic but also political and institutional changes that late medieval Sardinia has faced.
In this contribution we intend to highlight the quantitative consistency of the surviving artefacts, highlighting the critical issues related to the lack of documentary sources. The types of artefacts will be examined, highlighting the differences between works from the Italic and Iberian peninsular area, some case studies will be examined, an attempt will be made to contextualize the works within the ecclesiastical space. The purpose of the study is to highlight how the changes related to the alternation of different government entities are also reflected in the island's artistic practice.
