Circo-scrivendo il Kosmos nella Polis. Pluralismo delle città portuali mediterranee e viaggiatori in epoca moderna (fine ‘600-inizio ‘700)
A kosmos in the polis: cultural pluralism of Mediterranean port cities in early modern travel accounts (late 17th – early 18th century)
Abstract
The material choices of foreigners in port cities provide an important access point to the way they constructed cultural hierarchies, useful for mapping different mentalities and giving order to diversity. They have defined as well the process of acculturation, outlining strategies used by foreigners to express their cultural belonging. By linking and comparing the experiences of Izmir, Valletta, Livorno and Marseilles as recounted in travel accounts in the 17th and 18th centuries, we can better understand the historical responses to cultural coexistence of different kosmoi in the poleis.
