Traces of cosmopolitanism and constructions of identity in the Sardinian mining world
Abstract
In the Sardinian mining districts, during the 20th century, important dynamics of social, material and cultural integration took place. Many of the protagonists of life in the lead-zinc mines of the Iglesias area, or in the coal mines of Serbariu, Seruci and Nuraxi Figus, came from outside, both on and off the island, with life plans that were sometimes intentional, sometimes the result of fortuitous choices. The multicultural communities that came into being thanks to them, including Iglesias and Carbonia, although with different histories, were made up of men and women of different origins, from Italian and European backgrounds. They animated social, cultural, affective and family ties with deep and lasting traces, far beyond the economic life of the mines. The voices of the non-Sardinian miners studied here, documented by means of the video, can begin to establish a discourse on these biographical singularities, linked to the great mechanism of homologation of the cultural dialectics of the modern mine as a producer of economic meaning, social relations and power, and new collective cultural identities.
