Photographing and representing: gazes on post-World War II Sardinia
Abstract
The essay means to provide some notations of cultural history on the ways in which Sardinia is represented in the Second World War starting from some photographs published between the fifties and sixties. The aim is to investigate the contribution of photos to the collective imagination and to underline the importance of the editorial operation as a source and outcome of a process in which the photographer participated with a fundamental role but of which he was not the only protagonist. After a quick historical and methodological framework, a brief overview of illustrative images is followed by conclusive considerations on the mechanisms of formation of the multiple public identity of the island.
