The Otherness in the re-visitation of a 18th century Portugal. The “Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire de ma vie“ by Giuseppe Gorani
Abstract
In this essay we explore how the 18th century Portugal was described in Giuseppe Gorani's Mémoires pour servir à l᾽histoire de ma vie (1811-16). Louis Marin's seminal concept of representation is used in order to scrutinise the social relations described in this work through reflexivity and transitivity. Alongside the analysis of the representation of different realities and ways of being in the world, we reflect on the author's "historical condition". Gorani wrote an autobiographical memorialist discourse, exposing a life path, and detailing Portuguese daily life (1765-67). Thus, we contextualise an author and his time and analyse his re-visitation of Portugal, revealing the Otherness embodied in the Mémoires of this citizen of the "Enlightenment".
