Notaries in the service of ecclesiastical institutions and social mobility in Italy in the late Middle Age (12th-15th centuries). Recent historiography, case studies and research perspectives
Abstract
This essay aims to provide a theoretical and historiographical framework around a theme of study at the intersection of two productive and consolidated strands of research in Italian medieval studies: on the one hand, the history of social mobility, in particular concerning the role assumed by technical and professional skills as a cha-nnel of social ascent; on the other, the history of the notary, understood as a social and professional category, at the service of secular and regular ecclesiastical insti-tutions in Italy in the late Middle Ages (12th-15th centuries), with a specific focus on some of the most recent case studies and research perspectives.
