Victims and criminals between italians immigrants workers in Córdoba, Argentina (1887/1912)
Abstract
Abstract
This article deal with the issue of mass Italian immigration in the city of Córdoba, Argentina, between 1887 and 1912 from the “losers” perspective, including in this category, the ones who saw their journey to the New World come to an end, either by death, prison, or death penalty. It analyzes the tensions created within the receptive society, as well as the associative and institutional Italian environment. The exacerbated vision of the migratory’s negative aspects fed the discussion of two contemporary myths. In Italy, “la più grande Italia al Plata”; in Argentina, the recourse of ultramarine immigration to transform and civilize the local society, being Domingo F. Sarmiento and Juan B. Alberdi the most important exponents.
