The Great Captain’s itinerary in Naples through diplomatic correspondence
Abstract
This paper is presented as a chronological itinerary of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, from his youth in Spain the service of the Crown to the Naples wars that conferred on him the title of Great Captain and his subsequent political apogee as the first viceroy of Naples and the consequent rupture of the relationship with Ferdinand the Catholic, which determined the decline of this key figure in the political panorama at the beginning of the 16th century. In order to trace this path, some sources have been analysed -published and unpublished, the latter coming from the Salazar and Castro collection- that make up the collection of the very rich diplomatic correspondence between the Catholic Monarchs and their entourage.
