Abstract

The birth of the State of Israel, on 14 May 1948, represented a turning point in the United States' policy towards the Middle East. Already the American intervention in the Iranian crisis (1946) and in the Greek-Turkish crisis (1946-1947), with the promulgation of the "Truman doctrine", had constituted the acknowledgement, on the part of Washington, that the Mediterranean the Middle East would increasingly become a fundamental theatre of the Cold War, even though Washington initially considered its intervention "temporary" and above all aimed at containing the Soviet expansion beyond that line, while remaining the attention and efforts of the Truman Administration mainly directed to the defense of irony curtain in Europe, judged as the absolute priority of the United States in the Cold War.
