What distinguishes a professional historian from an amateur: reflections about logic and historical method
Abstract
Abstract
The following paper aims to show the complexity of gaining true historical knowledge by analysing the historical method in the light of logic. The work will describe research methods generally used by amateurs to evaluate the validity of their results. Starting from 20th century philosophical literature about historical method, it will be suggested to reason by means of logical calculation, applying propositional logic, first-order logic and modal logic.
Riassunto
Il contributo affronta la tematica del metodo storiografico, esaminato alla luce della logica. Obiettivo del lavoro è mostrare la complessità della vera conoscenza della storia, ed anche il riflettere sui metodi di ricerca usati da alcuni amatori e il valutare la verità o meno delle loro conclusioni. Per raggiungere tale obiettivo, partendo dal dibattito filosofico sviluppatosi nel secolo scorso, si procede nel ragionamento per mezzo del calcolo logico ai casi proposizionale, del prim’ordine e modale.
