Calabria e Mediterraneo: merci, mercanti e porti tra il XVIII e il XIX secolo
Calabria and the Mediterranean Sea: goods, merchants and ports between the 18th and 19th centuries
Abstract
Between XVIII and XIX centuries in Calabria the Sea was the main way of freight transport (wheat, vinegar, wine, oil, grape, citrus fruits, silk, pitch, etc.), that from production place went to near ports of embarkation. Besides the Port of Reggio - with an intense traffic of merchants and foreign shipowners - and the Port of Crotone, characterized by intense traffics from Taranto and Messina, “scari”, “caricatoi” and “rade” have helped the use of fast and light boats. First Feluccas, “uzzi” and “paranze” reached with their charges Genoa, Lyon, Marseille and Malta into the mediterranean scenery, ruled by Messina - an international free port and a trading and transition point – then they reached Venice and Trieste.
Tra il secolo XVIII e il secolo XIX il mare costituiva in Calabria il principale mezzo di trasporto delle merci (grano, aceto, vino, olio, uva, agrumi, seta, pece, ecc.), che dai luoghi di produzione si dirigevano verso i luoghi di imbarco più vicini. Oltre Reggio, porto che registrava un notevole traffico di mercanti e di armatori forestieri, e di Crotone, porto di intenso movimento da Taranto allo Stretto di Messina, “scari”, “caricatoi” e rade facilitavano l’impiego di imbarcazioni leggere e rapide. Feluche, “uzzi” y “paranze”, da un lato, raggiungevano con i loro carichi Genova, Lione ma anche Marsiglia e Malta nello scenario mediterraneo, dominato da Messina, porto franco internazionale e piazza di commerci e di transito dei prodotti, e dall’altro raggiungevano Venezia e Trieste.
