No Grants, No Travel, No Excuses: Researching and Writing Early North American History in the Digital Age

Abstract

The paper offers a personal review of the impact of technology, and its limitations, for researchers of the ethnohistory of Native peoples in early North America. Researchers in this field faced a number of problems, including the fact that needed sources were often quite difficult to access. Today the situation is much changed thanks to technology and the web. But there are problems with easy access to the web and technology. Much of the information, other than that at research universities’, or libraries’, websites is unfiltered and not peer reviewed. At the same time, there is too little available on the web. Rarely is the collection that one wants completely available. Lastly, and this may be a particularly American problem, the access that the web has provided can diminish careers and intellectual development. Fewer research trips also means diminished opportunities to meet researchers with like interests and fewer opportunities to exchange ideas, offer and receive guidance about research collections. For all the benefits that it has brought, the web and its resources must not be a substitute for what we do. As humanists, we must not let the conveniences of the web take the human element, in all its myriad forms, out of our work.

Il saggio offre una rassegna personale dell'impatto della tecnologia, e delle sue limitazioni, per i ricercatori della etnostoria dei popoli nativi nel primo Nord America. I ricercatori in questo campo si trovano di fronte a una serie di problemi, compreso il fatto che le fonti di cui hanno bisogno erano spesso di accesso molto difficile. Infine, e questo può essere un problema soprattutto americano, l'accesso che ha fornito il web può diminuire le carriere e lo sviluppo intellettuale. Meno viaggi di ricerca significano anche meno possibilità di incontrare i ricercatori con interessi simili e meno opportunità di scambiare idee, offrire e ricevere indicazioni sulle ricerche. Nonostante tutti i benefici che ha portato, il web e le sue risorse non devono essere un sostituto di quello che facciamo. Come umanisti, non dobbiamo permettere che le comodità del Web mettano l'elemento umano, in tutte le sue infinite forme, fuori del nostro lavoro.
