Italians and Italianisms in Florencio Sánchez's theatrical texts
Abstract
Among the plays written by Florencio Sánchez (1875‐1910) we can find some interesting figures coming from Italy and the use of Italian and italianisms (that is to say forms from Italian dialects). This study traces the signs of the linguistic presence of Italian in Sánchez’s texts, trying to find out the reasons why Italian language has been placed just in some texts, and not in other ones. Similarly, the parts where Sánchez evokes Italy as a socio‐cultural model are stressed, as well as the author’s particular preference for Italian music, opera above all , as a ‘sound track’ for some scenes.
An overall view emerges of the re‐lationship between Sánchez as a playwrighter and Italy.
