The Charrúas and other Uruguayan natives in the stories of some Sardinian-Iberian missionaries from the 17th and 18th centuries and of travellers, teachers and Italian immigrants of the 19th century.
Abstract
So far, the theme of indigenous peoples of Uruguay has not been adequately taken into account in Italy. This essay, although far from filling such a gap in history, describes the missionary activity accomplished into the Charruas and Guenoas native tribes by some Sardinian‐Iberians Jesuites living in the 17th and 18th century, through the evidence of a book written by the Jesuit Father Antonio Machoni in 1732.
This article also shows the works of three Italian authors of the 19th century, Paolo Mantegazza, Giovanni Battista Brignardello and Giosué Bordoni, who devoted their efforts to the indigenous Charrua tribes; such works are included into more complex publications about Uruguay and other Platense area countries.
