The Islamisation of Tunisian Revolution

Abstract

The evolution of the Tunisian revolution and the empowerment of Islamists confirm that the Arab world, ei-ther for Islamisation of the nation or for nationalization of Islam, continues eluding the problem of modernity that is the separation of politics and religion. A brief history of Tunisia shows that even Bourguiba, the great reformer of modern Tunisian society and women's liberator, has been able to advance step by step on the path of secularization, claiming either the right or the Koran. So, it has stimu-lated ambiguity finally handled by the Nahda, the Islamist party in power, to Islamize the society according with the Bourguiba constitution. Even after the revolution, the modernist elites are not able to develop a modern structural project that is a real renewal of the old system and may launch a process of democratisation based on a real individual freedom. Yet, the innovative thought of M. Talbi proclaims his conviction that the secularization of society is the only way for Muslim countries to overcome the paralysis.

L’évolution de la révolution tuni-sienne avec la prise de pouvoir des islamistes confirme que les pays du monde arabe, en se positionnant soit pour une islamisation de l’État soit pour une étatisation de l’Islam, continuent à éluder le problème de la modernité c’est-à-dire la séparation du politique et du religieux. Un bref aperçu historique de la Tunisie montre que même Bourguiba, le réforma-teur de la société tunisienne moderne et libérateur de la femme, n’a pu avancer sur le chemin de la sécularisation que par étapes, en se réclamant de la raison mais aussi du Coran et en alimentant ainsi l’ambiguïté exploitée par la Nahdha, le parti islamiste au pouvoir. Même après la révolution, les élites modernistes ont du mal à élaborer un projet structurel moderne qui soit une véritable refonte du sys-tème ancien et puisse ouvrir les portes d’un processus de démocratisation fondé sur une réelle liberté in-dividuelle. Pourtant la pensée novatrice de M. Talbi proclame que la sécularisation de la société est la seule voie d’issue pour que les pays mu-sulmans sortent de l’immobilisme.
