Image and thaumaturgy in modern times: the worship of Salvador de Horta in the former Crown of Aragon
Abstract
The Catalan Franciscan Salvador de Horta dies in 1567 in the city of Cagliari in the odor of sanctity. After his death, venerations continue to spread and thousands of pilgrims visit his tomb in Cagliari. The Catho-lic Church begins his canonization process in 1600 and Salvador is beati-fied by Pope Paul V in 1606. This paper presents a study of Salvador’s holy images and cult in the early modern period with a focus on the Catholic Mediterranean countries. In the Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries we find many paintings and sculptures representing the Francis-can friar as a thaumaturgist. The article examines the creation process of this specific iconography and the several reasons for its successful diffusion.
El franciscano catalán Salvador de Horta fallece en 1567 en la ciudad de Cagliari en olor de santidad. En los años posteriores a su muerte se genera una potente devoción que abre puerta a su proceso de canonización, iniciado oficialmente en 1600. La investigación propone el estudio de la imagen de Salvador de Horta y la difusión de su culto en época moderna, centrándose en el Mediterráneo católico como centro de creación, desarrollo y circulación de su iconografía. A partir del examen de varias pinturas y esculturas que representan el fraile como taumaturgo, se analizarán los motivos que conducen al éxito de esta iconografía y su importancia en el proceso de expansión del culto al franciscano.
