Abstract

Symbols of power and the use of images in achieving political objectives has long been the subject of an increasing number of studies. Of particular interest are coats of arms, objects made from gold, paintings and sculptures not only as representations of their status as objects of art per se but also as examples of products commissioned by the wealthy, often sovereigns, who used them to consolidate their own consensus. During the 14thcentury, there were a number of important personalities who exploited images as a visual mode of consolidating their authority. Among these were Peter the Ceremonious, a sovereign of the Crown of Aragon, and Robert of Anjou, King of Naples, two widely researched study-cases. This study looks at the figure of Mariano IV, sovereign of the judge-ruled kingdom of Arborea and his relations with other contemporary rulers, in a period of history (the mid-fourteenth century) in which Sardinia was de factocoming under the territorial control of the Crown of Aragon.
