Genoa and the collection of news during the Turkish civil war of 1481
Abstract
The sudden death of Sultan Mehmed II in 1481, during the Otranto crisis, and the consequent Turkish civil war, raised hopes in Genoa. The aim of the contribution is to analyse the way information were collected, in order to understand how, through which players, and at what speed news reached Genoa. Between spies, ambassadors and secret agents, the Genoese government attempted to realise its dreams of reconquering the lost colonies in the East, and in particular Caffa, by using the crusader fleet bound for the siege of Otranto.
