Sospetti, giustificazioni, narrative.
Suggestions, justifications, narratives. Venetian and Genoese 'betrayal' in the crusade of Varna (1444)
Abstract
This paper delves into the episode of the Crusade of Varna, namely the Ottoman army’s crossing of the Straits. Seeking to trace the origins of the black legend, which suggests Genoese involvement at the expense of the crusaders, the main literary and documentary sources have been examined. Additional narratives emerge, developed after the defeat, targeting the Venetian maritime forces, accused of neglecting their surveillance duties. The opposing attributions of responsibility conceal a connection in their gestation, positioning one as the outcome of the other.
