The Friars Minor of Constantinople, 1437-1453: a network-hub of Turkish news, between Franciscan topoi and humanist reverberations
Abstract
In the 15 years preceding the conquest of Constantinople, the Friars Minor were actively engaged in promoting the reunification of the Church and the Crusade. In 1437, the Italian Observants reorganised the Eastern Vicariate under their control, establishing in the Byzantine capital and coordinating activity in the Balkans and Black Sea region from there. The friars were able to disseminate information about the brutal experience of the conquest to the West, guiding the perception of complex issues such as the enslavement of their coreligionists, with whom they shared the same vicissitudes.
