From a natural resource to a dyeing material: the use of grana in the south-eastern Iberian Mediterranean at the end of the Middle Ages
Abstract
This article examines the exploitation, regulation of the use and productive destination of the natural resource of grana in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, with a special focus on the southern regions of the Crown of Aragon. The aim is to present the areas and methods of extraction of the product, the rural communities involved in the work to obtain it, the administration of its exploitation by the municipal authorities, and to gauge the insertion of this dyeing substance in the industry and the market beyond the regional limits.
El presente artículo examina el aprovechamiento, la regulación del uso y el destino productivo del recurso natural de la grana en el sureste ibérico con especial atención a las comarcas del sur de la Corona de Aragón. Se pretende presentar las zonas y modo de extracción del producto, las comunidades rurales implicadas en los trabajos para su obtención, la administración de su explotación por las autoridades municipales, y calibrar la inserción de esta sustancia tintórea en la industria y el mercado más allá de los límites regionales.
