Wool manufactures in Castelló de la Plana at the end of the 15th century
Abstract
From the end of the 14th century to the middle of the 15th century, leather production shaped the socio-economic development of Castelló. In parallel, during this period the wool textile activity progressively strengthened. The decline of the leather sector since 1455 will favor an economic and job reconversion in the town, allowing the takeoff of textile manufacturing and the development of personal careers by some enterprising artisans (mainly “pelaires”) who will manage to diversify their businesses, get rich and take part of the oligarchy that rules the town.
