The power of water: first data on rodezno and regolfo mills in late medieval Castile
Abstract
In this work, documentary evidence is provided that attests to the existence of regolfo mills, or turbines moved by whirlpools of water, in the late medieval Castilian period, the first European territory for which they are known. There were at least three artifacts of this variety located in the Segura River, as it passed through the city of Murcia, from the end of the 14th century, as well as others from his garden, and some more from the western Sierra Morena or the outskirts of Seville, already in the 15th century.
