Abstract

We analyse the strategies for the supply, production and consumption of salt in the inland Catalonia in the early medieval centuries (9th-12th centuries). We assess the volume of salt needed to supply the livestock of monastic establishments and small landowners whose production strategies focused on self-sufficiency. We analyse to what extent the inland production centres had sufficient capacity to supply salt and cover the needs of the herds that grazed on the inland plains in winter and in the high Pyrenean valleys in summer.
