The decisive battle as a diplomatic event: Almansa (1707) and Brihuega-Villaviciosa (1710) in French diplomatic strategy
Abstract
Based on French diplomatic correspondence with its agents in the major capitals of continental Europe, this article analyzes the impact on international relations of two decisive battles in the War of Spanish Succession: Almansa (1707) and Brihuega-Villaviciosa (1710). The objective is to assess to what extent a clear military victory can be identified as an explanatory element in a negotiating process leading to peace agreements, or if, on the contrary, it should be framed within broader dynamics that must be interrelated with geostrategic, economic, mercantile, and dynastic factors.
