Allies in defense and rivals in trade: French privateers in Spanish transatlantic and regional naval policy, 1701-1719
Abstract
During the War of Succession, France supported the Spanish Crown in the protection of transatlantic trade and Spanish-American territories. Royal armaments organized in collaboration with privateers were sent from French ports in escort, transport and defense missions used to practice trade. At the end of the conflict, the French presence was established in the Pacific, acting as privateers-coast guards and smugglers, causing friction with regional authorities and rivalry with the commercial monopoly. We examine the nature of these squads, the individuals and interest groups behind them, and their interference and impact on Spanish imperial policy.
