Paguistas y prestamistas de Felipe V en Cataluña tras la Guerra de Sucesión (1714-1720)

Payers and moneylenders of Philip V in Catalonia after the War of Succession (1714-1720)

Abstract

The latest studies are highlighting the importance that Catalonia had in supplying Felipe V's troops after the War of Succession. For some authors, it is proof of the rapid economic recovery and the support of the new monarchy for the inhabitants of the Principality. However, there are still many aspects to analyse in order to assess more precisely the role that businessmen had in strengthening the new Bourbon state. Among them are the paguistas. That is to say, the people who executed the bills of exchange sent to the Principality by the great financiers of the Crown. The objective of this work is to analyze these Catalan paguistas and their importance in the configuration of the State.

Los últimos estudios están destacando la importancia que tuvo Cataluña en el abastecimiento de las tropas de Felipe V después de la Guerra de Sucesión. Para algunos autores, es una prueba de la rápida recuperación económica y del apoyo de la nueva monarquía a los habitantes del Principado. Sin embargo todavía quedan muchos aspectos que analizar para poder valorar con más precisión el papel que tuvieron los hombres de negocios en el fortalecimiento del nuevo Estado borbónico. Entre ellos están los paguistas. Es decir, las personas que ejecutaban las letras de cambio enviadas al Principado por los grandes financieros de la Corona. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar a estos paguistas catalanes y su importancia en la configuración del Estado.
