Alberoni's confessions to the Duke of Orléans: The strategy of an actor in the crisis of Franco-Spanish relations (1719-1720)
Abstract
During the War of the Quadruple Alliance, the Spain of Philip V clashed with the France of Louis XV, then governed by a regent, the Duke of Orléans. This conflict between the Bourbons represented a crisis in Franco-Spanish relations. The fall of the minister Alberoni gave rise to conversations with an agent of Cardinal Dubois, the regent's main adviser, and to some highly instructive reports. They reveal the fragility of the Regent's power at a time when he was facing a number of oppositions. They also illustrate the deep integration of domestic affairs with the diplomatic realities of relations between France and Spain.
