A cordial disagreement: French business environments and the Spanish monarchy during the Seven Years' War
Abstract
Trade was the backbone of the dynastic alliance between France and Spain in the 18th century. This alliance, reactivated during the Seven Years’ War and the negotiation of the Third Family Compact, was nonetheless put to the test during the conflict. This article analyzes the economic ambiguities of the family relationship between the two monarchies, as well as the realities of a delicate balance between Bourbon dynastic interests and the interests of French business circles.
