Franco-Spanish diplomatic collaboration in Italy during the War of the Spanish Succession in the face of cracks in the Union of Crowns. The cas of the agents in Genoa in 1709-1710
Abstract
The alliance between the crowns of France and Spain during the Spanish Succession experienced some tense episodes in 1709-1710, when Louis XIV considered abandoning his grandson to sign a peace treaty with his enemies. Distrust grew between the courts, but also between the diplomatic envoys who collaborated in Italy to defend the kings' interests and win back lost possessions. Genoa became the scene of the first cracks in the agents' relationship, a telling example of the tension between national and dynastic interests within the Bourbon bloc.
