From francophobia to francophilia: the trajectory of Manuel de Sentmenat between Spain and France (1651-1703)
Abstract
Manuel de Sentmenat y de Lanuza (1651-1710) was a Hispanic subject who for most of his life confronted the French on the battlefields and in courtly settings. From an early age, the Catalan represented the interests of the Hispanic monarchy in opposition to the expansionist ambitions of the Sun King. However, after the death of Charles II, Manuel de Sentmenat, who was then serving as ordinary Hispanic ambassador to the French court, forwarded the testamentary dispositions of the late Hispanic monarch to Louis XIV. From then on, the traditional enemy became an agent to safeguard French mercantile interests in America.
