Maids, dames and ladies. The Spanish presence in Naples through domestic service (1580-1640)
Abstract
The Spanish presence in Naples significantly increased following the reform of the Spanish Monarchy's army in the 1580s. In addition to military staff and members of the administration, hundreds of young women also relocated to the city of Naples to become part of the domestic service in the households of the military and government elite, including those of the viceroys. Through the study of notarial and inquisitorial sources and documentation from various charitable institutions, a collective narrative is constructed for pays attention to those who provided and hired this female domestic service, the conditions under which it was performed, and how it impacted the court's social organization.
