Conquistatori.
Conquerors. The military involvement of the Iberian aristocracy in the conflicts over Sardinia (1323-1355)
Abstract
This paper analyses the military involvement of the Iberian aristocracy in the first two conflicts declared following the incorporation of Sardinia into the Crown of Aragon, i.e. the war of conquest (1323-1326) and the rebellion of Mariano IV of Arborea (1354-1355). To this end, a synthesis of the main events that took place in the two conflicts abovementioned is made. Special attention is paid to the role played in them by the aristocratic sectors. Next, its provides an estimate of the number of combatants who made up the nobiliary companies mobilised in 1323 and 1354, and it explains the institutional channels that guided their recruitment and organisation. Finally, some of the effects of military service on the individuals and lineages mobilised in Sardinia in this period are presented.
