Governing by representation: the Monarchy and the Kingdom of Sardinia (15th-18th centuries)
Abstract
In the last quarter of the fifteenth century, the Trastámara monarchy completed the process of incorporating Sardinia. The configuration of the territory as a Kingdom within the Hispanic group began at that time. Fundamental pieces of the process were the figures in charge of representing the person of the king and his governing council. The goal would be met in two phases, separated by more than half a century of distance. Ferdinand the Catholic gave stability and permanence to his alter ego, with the title of royal lieutenant, unique character for the entire territory and a preeminence that gave him authority and powers superior to the rest of the royal officers. Philip II completed the process with the creation of the Royal Audience, erected as the political council of the viceroy and high court of justice for the Kingdom. This achieved the full integration of Sardinia into the Hispanic administrative system.
