Language and authority in the medieval Aragonese communities. Declaratory and commissioning acts
Abstract
In southern Aragon at the end of the medieval period we see the emergence of a space of democratic power based on the socialized use of speech. The acts of speech thereby became authority acts. And this was true not only for judges and councilmen, but also for ordinary citizens, in so far as the laws allowed them to demand their rights. In this way speech became a tool for achieving justice, and it fostered the evolution of language to suit the new social needs. Reading notarial documents, we become aware that there existed several communities which show a lively and participative political action, where government and judges endeavoured to adapt laws to society’s new requirements.
