Quoniam multa et magna utilitas est preterita et presentia scribere. The role of the historian in the Middle Ages and in the present day
Abstract
This paper addresses the problem of the usefulness of medieval studies by considering the functions of the notion of the Middle Ages in the present, the development of the area known as 'medievalism' and the 'uses of the medieval past' that have been made in the last two centuries. The paper reflects on the attitude of specialists in the period in relation to these phenomena and compares the idea of the usefulness of History in the Middle Ages and today.
En el presente trabajo se plantea la problemática de la utilidad de los estudios medievales atendiendo a las funciones de la noción de Edad Media en el presente, el desarrollo del área conocida como ‘medievalismo’ y los ‘usos del pasado medieval’ que se vienen dando en los dos últimos siglos. Se reflexiona sobre la actitud de los especialistas en el periodo en relación con estos fenómenos y se compara la idea de utilidad de la Historia en la Edad Media y en la actualidad.
