Arquitectura i poder a la Lleida del segle XIII. Preamble
Architecture and power in the 13th century Lleida. Preface
Abstract
The conquest of Lleida in 1149 signified the domination of an entirely islamicised city in which standing remains of earlier periods, and in particular of the Roman-Visigothic period) were barely visible. The post-conquest history of the city, especially during the 12th and 13th centuries, is characterised by the transformation and elimination of all Islamic vestiges, and its simultaneous transformation by the new powers into a feudal city. Although some houses and parts of the Islamic city were preserved, the general tendency was the introduction of a new architecture that proclaimed the reinstalled Christian power. The parish churches, which in many cases replaced the mosques or oratories, adopted a Romanesque model characteristic of the thirteenth century.
