Quarantine and home isolation. Palermo during the plague of 1624

Abstract

During the plague of 1624-1626 in Palermo, the rulers identified the guiding lines and established the rules to build a surveillance and confinement system throughout the territory. The system was centered on lazarettos but decentralized to hospitals, convents, and private homes. The present investigation is directed to the reconstruction of imposition of quarantine and home confinement that affected a group of inhabitants of the city, to the modalities of identification and control of the recipients of the restrictive measures and to the strategies attempted by the authorities to involve the population in the surveillance operations.

Durante la peste del 1624-1626 a Palermo, i governanti individuarono i principi ispiratori e stabilirono le norme per costruire un sistema di sorveglianza e reclusione diffuso nel territorio. Il sistema era incentrato sui lazzaretti ma decentrato negli ospedali, nei conventi, nelle case private. La presente indagine è rivolta in particolare alla ricostruzione delle misure di imposizione della quarantena e di confinamento domiciliare che interessarono un gruppo di abitanti della città, alle modalità di individuazione e controllo dei destinatari delle misure restrittive e alle strategie tentate dalle autorità per coinvolgimento della popolazione nelle operazioni di sorveglianza.
