Selling annuities, attending the needy: the issue of municipal debt in Barcelona during the fifteenth century
Abstract
The starting point of this text are the years prior to the outbreak of the Catalan civil war (1462-1472) and the state of Barcelona’s finances at that time, specifically its public debt. In this market intervened a wide range of the late medieval society, including a number of assistance institutions, among them the Hospital of the Santa Creu. The main goal of this article is to assert what relationship was established at an economic level between the municipality and these organizations during much of the fifteenth century, particularly during the war period and the years that immediately follow it.
